How To Make the Most of Your Summer Break

June 24, 2024 College

Summer break—those few precious golden weeks of freedom and sun. It is a time for you guys to escape from your everyday duties, be you a student, a working young professional, or anyone in between.

If you want to feel better, get some new experiences and go back to your previous self with new energy and spark; the best way to achieve that is to make the best out of your summer. Let’s talk about how exactly you can make the most of this special time.

Planning and Preparation

Set Goals

The very first question is:

  • What do you want your summer to be?

Maybe you want to have fun, that’s all right, but also consider what you hope to accomplish. Maybe you want to get better at something, exercise more, or even read the mountain of books that you have sitting around.

  • Short-term objectives: these are your low-hanging fruits. Do you want to complete an online course, or learn to cook a new dish? These smaller goals will keep you motivated.
  • Long-term objectives: these are the real-deal goals. Usually, they are goals that every one of us has been desiring to accomplish for a longer time.

Create a Schedule

And I can hear you groaning at the word schedule… However, we are not speaking of a tight, over-scheduled plan that sucks the life out of everything. Everything is about balance.

Productive vs. Fun: As tempting as watching a season of your favorite show in one sitting, you can be just as content going for a walk and spending a portion of your day learning and feeding your brain. Perhaps split learning and lounging time – morning could be a learning book reading session and afternoon for unrelated reading!

Personal Development

Summer is not only for rest and recreation; it is time for inner development. Considering that you have some time off, so why not use it constructively and make it beneficial in every sense of living?

Learn Something New

Take for example the ever-so-famous quote, “Learning never exhausts the mind.” It’s true! And our brain is active with a high spirit. Whether it be playing the guitar, programming, or taking up gardening, learning new skills or hobbies can increase your self-esteem, make you more productive, and possibly motivate those around you to do the same.

Read Books

What’s not to love about a good book? It is not only an escape but a glimpse into the minds of others. It increases empathy, develops your brain, reduces stress, and makes you more creative. Whether you’re into science fiction that keeps you as eager and anxious as can be or self-improvement guides that change your point of view, there’s a genre for everybody.

Anyway, what will you learn this summer? And what books will move you to a different universe?

Physical and Mental Well-Being

Regular Physical Activity

Regular physical activity has numerous health benefits for both the body and mind. Physically, it helps improve cardiovascular health, control diabetes, and reduce the risk of some cancers as well as strengthen bone health.

On the emotional and mental level, it reduces stress, brings joy, increases your value, and raises intellectual strength. Endorphins are natural mood elevators and physical exercise activates the release of endorphins as well as reduces cortisol levels, a stress-inducing hormone.

Summer Exercise Choices for You

  1. Try aerobic exercises like jogging, cycling, swimming
  2. Leave the house for walks or try gardening
  3. Take a group fitness class or join a team sport

Learn to be Mindful and Chill

Using mindfulness and relaxation to help you manage your stress will increase your mental wellness. Meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, tai chi, yoga, and deep breathing exercises are helpful to decrease tension in the muscles, and slow breathing and the mind down.

Social Connections

Social connections with family and friends are fundamental to well-being. Spending time with family and friends promotes a longer lifespan, better immune system functioning, less inflammation, and faster recovery from diseases.
